COTC Program: 2013-2018

Attawapiskat FN, Kashechewan FN & Fort Albany FN are in a unique situation:

  • They own transmission and distribution companies, which provide access to provincial CDM funding
  • Most homes have had some basic energy conservation products installed, through the FNEI Conservation Program and COTC CDM program
  • By end of 2017, 30 homes per community will have received major energy retrofits through the CDM program
  • Hopefully 20 more/community will have this work done by 2020, for a total of approximately 150 homes
  • Community members can be hired and trained to do the retrofit work

Conservation on the Coast Initiatives:

COTC Program: Small Business Lighting

  • Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) provided volunteer electricians to do lighting retrofits
  • Business owners very happy with lower energy bills and improved light quality
  • More work to be done

Home Energy Audits and Retrofits

  • Energy Audits started in 2014 and are ongoing – all homes will be audited by 2020
  • Install energy efficient products – CFL/LED light bulbs, water heater blankets and pipe wrap etc., (plus some fridge replacements in 2014-2015)
  • Insulation, air sealing and mechanical ventilation installed on eligible homes

Installing Energy Saving Products During COTC Energy Audit

  • LED/CFL bulbs
  • Water heater tank insulation
  • Pipe wrap
  • Power Bars
  • Outdoor timers for block heaters and Christmas lights

COTC Energy Retrofit Work

  • Air seal attic floor, install HRV ductwork
  • Insulate attic (blown-in insulation 19” – R50)
  • Air seal window and door frames
  • Install and tape weather barrier on exterior walls
  • Insulate exterior and crawlspace walls with 1.5” of extruded polystyrene (adding R7.5) and crawlspace walls, sealed at all seams

COTC Program Progress To Date

  • COTC Program crews have retrofitted approximately 30 homes per community – 90 in total
  • Anticipate doing energy retrofits on at least 60 more homes by 2020.
  • On average the energy retrofits are lowering energy bills by 25%, some homes are seeing 40% + reduction!
